The National Monument (Monas) is one of Jakarta’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Indonesia’s independence. Standing at 132 meters tall, Monas is located in Merdeka Square in the heart of Central Jakarta. It was inaugurated in 1975 and was designed by Indonesian architect Freddy Bijlani and sculptor Ir. Rooseno. The monument was built to commemorate Indonesia’s struggle for independence from colonial rule, with its towering structure symbolizing the spirit and unity of the nation.
At the top of the monument is a golden flame made of bronze, which represents the country’s enduring spirit and the ideals of freedom. Visitors can take an elevator or climb the stairs to the observation deck at the top, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of Jakarta’s cityscape. Surrounding the monument is Merdeka Square, a large open park where people can relax and enjoy recreational activities. The monument also houses a museum on the lower floors, which showcases the history of Indonesia’s independence, along with exhibits and dioramas detailing the country’s journey to freedom. Monas is not only a major historical and cultural symbol, but it is also a popular tourist attraction, drawing both locals and visitors who come to learn about Indonesia’s past and enjoy the stunning views of Jakarta.
